My Most Anticipated Films of 2022

Just like TV series, each new year brings us a handful of new films. Here I have listed a few films I am looking forward to seeing the most during the forthcoming year.
- Babylon (Paramount Pictures)
This upcoming period drama is said to occur in Pre-Code Hollywood in the late 1920s and early 1930s when the film industry transformed from silent to sound films. Based on Chazelle and composer Justin Hurwitz’s previous collaboration in La La Land (2016), and my personal favourite, Whiplash (2014), I hope to experience a sound-wise mesmerising production.

Starring: Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Tobey Maguire.
Release date: January 20, 2023. (UK).
- Belfast (Universal Pictures)
This coming of age comedy-drama presents the director Branagh’s “most personal film” to date, focusing on a working-class Northern Irish Protestant family during the Troubles. The film was released in late 2021 in the United States, receiving highly positive reviews and even Oscar predictions.

Starring: Jude Hill, Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds.
Release date: January 21, 2022.
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)
I have only recently warmed up to Doctor Strange himself, so the sequel to the 2016 film could not come at a better time. Taking place after the happenings in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Disney + series Loki (2021) and WandaVision (2021), the film brings together Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff to fight off unspeakable evil forces.

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Elizabeth Olsen, Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Release date: May 6, 2022.
- She Said (Universal Pictures)
Capturing an influential true story, the plot speaks for itself: Following the work of the journalists Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan) and Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan), whose work helped to launch the #MeToo movement, eventually leading to the sexual misconduct allegations against Hollywood’s largest producer.

Starring: Zoe Kazan, Carey Mulligan, Patricia Clarkson and Andre Braugher.
Release date: November 18, 2022.
- Amsterdam (previously listed as Untitled David O. Russell Project) (20th Century Studios)
This period drama film is tightly keeping its plot details under wraps, but my undying love for Russell’s earlier projects Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and American Hustle (2013), makes this yet-to-be-named film (although there are speculations around the possible title Canterbury Glass) one of my most anticipated films of the year. Needless to say, the casting of the iconic Margot Robbie might play its part.

Starring: Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana and John David Washington.
Release date: November 4, 2022.
- The Wonder (Netflix)
Based on a book by Emma Donoghue, this psychological thriller set in the Irish Midlands during the 1850s follows the story of a nurse Lib Wright (Florence Pugh), who is summoned to take care of an 11-year-old girl who mysteriously stopped eating — yet is still alive. The released images of Pugh standing amongst the rural Irish scenery surprisingly raised my interest towards this film to another level.
